To all writers who have submitted work to us and not yet heard back. We thank you for giving us the opportunity to read your manuscript. Alas, this venerable magazine has recently been acquired by a new publisher. And therefore there will be a new Editor-in-Chief: Marvin Kaye. If you have a submission in the electronic submission portal at Weird Tales, your submission should be considered returned to you whether or not you have heard back. All stories sent via snail mail will be returned. Please check back to the website for updated information. (NOTE: currently closed to all submissions until further notice).

Just to be clear…there is still the possibility that I will be involved in some form with the new incarnation of the magazine – although it has not been finalized just yet.
And the new Editor-in-Chief will be reading fiction soon and IS interested in what has already been submitted. However considering it will be a while before Weird Tales re-opens to reading and buying new fiction, we thought it best to let the stories go, so that writers do not have to wait so long….
thanks for the update.
wonder what the best course of action is now? wait to see if nuWT will allow submissions (i think my story was best suited to WT) or submit elsewhere? or even do something else with it? (i.e. turn it into a script? turn it ino a novel? a comic? post it on the net yourself? just sit on it?)
anyone else wondering what to do with their story? im pretty lost at the moment.
sorry didnt see Ann V’s comment above before i wrote mine…
Well, that’s a bummer (Re: submissions being released), but not unexpected considering the massive shake up.
Four months of waiting… =(
I wonder if you can clarify something for me. You said that all fiction should be considered released, but you also said “And the new Editor-in-Chief will be reading fiction soon and IS interested in what has already been submitted.”
Does this mean that we can shop our stories around, but the new editor *will* be reading through the current slush pile at some point? Or will all the current submissions be purged, and when the new editor is ready, reopen for new submissions?
Thanks.
Oh, how sad. I was actually quite proud of my story “Mistakes.” Now I have need of haste, as I have that story lying inert on a hard drive in a dead computer. If I can recover it, then all will be well and if, by some chance, it hasn’t been published when submissions are re-opened, I hope I can send it back.
Or does it mean we can resubmit these stories when the magazine reopens?
Given what Ann says in the first comment, you can resubmit once WT reopens, but to HOLD the stories that long would be unfair to the writers since apparently a set time to reopen has not been determined yet. I don’t get why people are considering the stories “rejected”. How can something that hasn’t been read and decided on be rejected, particularly since Ann says Kaye IS interested in what was in queue.
Anyone have an idea as to when we could expect to submit our work for review? A rough timetable perhaps?
I’m with Jared above; I’m curious as to when we can send submissions.
I agree! It would be nice to know when we can start submitting.
6 months of waiting for this? Nice to see the new editor cares about Weird Tales fans and prospective writers.
I don’t like what has happened to this magazine. Anyone for a boycott?
Surely you’ve waited longer for a response, and in the end only gotten a lovely little form rejection! It is what it is; give that piece a fresh-eye edit and send it rolling on!
Ok. It is 10 October, and I was still checking the Weird Tales portal for an update on my submission status. It still shows active, despite about 10 weeks of waiting. I am certainly glad I dropped by today, as this frees me to submit my story elsewhere. Sorry to hear about the shake up being managed this way (with no e-mail notice to writers with work submitted).
Who else is open to submissions at the moment that is worth submitting to?
